Hemp seed oil love story

Once upon a time, I started adding hemp seed oil to my salads (because you’re not supposed to cook with it) and even though the taste was a bit weird and it took me a while to get used to, it has soon turned into a staple. Oh, I’m also a huge fan of hemp seeds. They make the tastiest additions to salads.

But hemp seed oil is much more than a tasty salad dressing! It packs incredible nutrients that beneficially influence the skin, making it absolutely gorgeous!

Applying it topically can benefit you as much as eating it. When I discovered some of the awesome benefits of hemp oil for skin, I started formulating with it, adding it to my DIY projects and recipes, testing it, discovering its many varieties of use and ways of how to apply hemp seed oil on skin.

We’ll have a look at how to use hemp seed oil for acne and in DIY skincare below. Let me clarify a few things before that.

Hemp oil vs hemp seed oil: what’s the difference?

Many of you are wondering what’s the difference between hemp oil and CBD. Trust me, you’re not alone. The whole weed issue can easily become confusing, so we’re taking a quick look at what it is all about before going on with hemp seed oil for acne.

Let’s get this clear: In case you’re thinking hemp oil and hemp seed oil are the same thing, the question is no. They are not, and here are the major differences:

CBD Hemp oil (cannabidiol)

Hemp CBD oil is an oil made from the cannabis plant; its leaves, stalks, and flowers. It contains high levels of cannabinoids, natural components in the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD takes up to 40% of the plant resin extract.

CBD oil (short for cannabidiol) has been in the spotlight these past few years since it’s considered a powerful natural remedy and a helpful one at that when it comes to treating various skin and medical conditions, such as anxiety, depression, inflammatory diseases, epilepsy, and much more.

Hemp seed oil

Hemp seed oil is made by cold-pressing hemp seeds, and it’s a common ingredient in skincare products. You can use it in DIY skincare as well, similar as you would any other carrier oil (such as rosehip oil for acne or argan oil for acne scars).

According to The Mirror,

Hemp and cannabis are cousins in the plant world, but cannabis has a much higher THC content than hemp. Hemp oil contains low levels of CBD – typically less than 25 parts per million – while CBD oil can be up to 15% CBD. Because the plants are related, some unscrupulous sellers of hemp oil are trying to market it for its medicinal value, which is negligible.

Hemp seed oil is safe to consume and to apply topically since it’s very nutritious. It is also one of the extremely popular natural and organic ingredients in skincare, a regular substitute for olive oil in the kitchen, among others. Oh, and does hemp seed oil contain CBD? Nope, it does not.

The oil contains phytosterols, which boost collagen production in the skin; it helps to restore and rejuvenate it.

Rich in vitamin E compounds, antioxidants that help to protect the skin from the environmental damage with anti-inflammatory properties and promote healthy skin

Hemp oil is just like any other natural oils. You can add it to your DIY recipes. We saw how beneficial it is, and it’s also great for all skin types with its healing properties.

I’ve used it in a few of my recipes, but it’s quite versatile so you can use hemp seed oil on face, body, and hair in the form of balms, lotions, butters. It can also be applied neat, or in a combination with essential oil:

Apart from these, you can easily whip up an of the following recipes with hemp oil. These are quick to make, affordable, and benefit your skin!

1.       A natural makeup remover

Without any other ingredients, you can make use of hemp oil makeup remover; it’s completely natural and easily applicable. Apply a few drops on your wipes and remove as you would with any other oil. It works great as an eye makeup remover as well!

2.       A carrier oil in my homemade wipes

You can easily substitute olive oil in this recipe for a hemp seed oil, making your own vegan homemade makeup remover wipes. The recipe is simple and it should take 10 minutes to make altogether.

3.       A carrier oil in a homemade lip balm

In case you need a more nourishing homemade lip balm (winter is still right here, and it doesn’t seem to go away), feel free to replace avocado oil with hemp seed oil.

I would add the hemp seed oil at the very end, with the essential oils to make sure it retains the highest nutritional value and quality.

4.       A healthy kick in a face mask

This anti-inflammatory spirulina face mask is a perfect recipe that calls for something as soothing as hemp seed oil. Use it instead of jojoba oil, keep the same amount and watch the green goo work its magic.

    1. Hi Katla,

Just discovered your site and reading about the Hemp seed oil for Acne and skin benefit. Lots of information, enjoyable to read. I am a mature lady with acne prone skin. I am going to try this oil.
You have also include some DIY for making oil to apply onto skin. Can I use hemp seed oil as Sun tan oil? go to under the sun to get dark tan? Do I have to mix it with other oil?

      Thanks
      friedi

      • Hello Friedi, thank you so much! I’m happy you find the information useful and helpful :). Now, I don’t recommend carrier oils as a natural suntan oil. There is a recipe on the blog on tanning oil, but it’s meant to be used inside of your home and not in direct sunlight. Oils can cause damage to the skin when directly exposed to sunlight so it’s better not to use them that way.
Now, you can use hemp seed oil neat (and don’t have to mix it). Or, you can mix it with other carrier oils (you can see how I used hemp oil in these recipes: llightweight facial oil or in this body butter). You can also add a few drops of essential oils to it or another carrier oil (here’s the list of all oils that are approved for acne and oily skin).
        Hope this helps! -Kat
