Let’s get to it!

What causes dark circles under your eyes?

I had a serious battle with my own dark circles not too long ago. During the winter, I looked like a zombie. Honestly, sometimes I scared myself with dark deep circles that were sometimes slightly puffy and sometimes completely flat.

I looked tired, creepy, slightly ill. The tan I got during the summer was already long gone come December. My face was pale and the additional dark circles did not help my overall appearance.

I don’t really wear a lot of make-up, so showing my circles off to a wider public was not something I enjoyed. Have you noticed that under a certain light, they look absolutely ghastly?

At one point, I had enough. I decided to analyze the cause of my vampire traces and eliminate them once and for all. I started browsing the web what is the best oil for under eyes, how to naturally eliminate the panda look, and for which oil is best for dark circles.

What you need to know is that I spend a lot of time behind a computer since I work from home, blogging, and freelancing. So, I believe my eyes are more tired because of that.

It was December, which means season celebrations all around. I went to a few birthday parties, sipped one mulled wine too many and there I was, me and my puffy dark eyes. I swear, at one point I looked like a panda (and not in a cute way)!

Also, the winter months are not very generous with sunlight nor nice weather. Dry skin, darkness without any trace of vitamin D take their toll. I’m not saying that you should go full-on suntan month. I’ve read that too much sun exposure could also darken the area under your eyes (this can be completely false though, do you know anything about it?).

Last but not least, I prefer to eat seasonally. You know, watermelons in the summer, potatoes in the winter, and no cherries in February. We all know that the selection of fresh fruit and veg is not the richest of all in the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore, poor nutrition could be a reason for dark under eye area.

The one thing you have to keep in mind is that the dark circles usually appear because of a number of reasons:

Aging: the older we get, the less collagen our skin produces. We have to keep providing nutrients that boost collagen production and the overall health of our skin. But don’t worry; when doing the research for what oil is best for dark circles, I’ve listed natural oils that slow down the signs of aging and promote healthy skin!

Allergies: seasonal allergies, such as hay fever may only make your dark circles worse. If that’s the case, focus on your allergies first before you head off treating your under-eye area.

Genetics: apparently, it happens. I’m not sure if it’s true. Some claim it might be. Some say it’s made up. What do you think?

Dehydration and dry skin: drink your water! Hydrate your skin! Oh, and go easy on the salt. It might have something to do with your circles if you eat too much of it. Don’t get me wrong, I love my food spiced up and salty. But…modesty works great here!

One cocktail too many: it’s alcohol’s fault. And lack of sleep. Go easy on all those margaritas! (it’s difficult, it’s summer, and they’re tasty, I know!)

A poor boring diet with no iron: you might have iron deficiency and that’s why your dark circles are also accompanied by dizziness, headaches, and other symptoms. I’m not an expert, but if you suspect it, go and talk to your medical advisor.

Fatigue and lack of sleep: this is a major cause for the appearance of dark circles. My sleeping habits are poor, and I know there’s a lot of us out there! If you’re a student, your sleep suffers. If you’re a new mom, your sleep is nonexistent (to some extent), if you’re self-employed, a freelancer, a business owner…Let’s face it, as much as we’d love to, sometimes quality sleep it just hard to get!

Stress overload and nervous tension: it’s always the stress’ fault, isn’t it?

A staring competition with your computer screen: stop. It might help. Just go on a daily walk, relax your eyes, and read a book (or a magazine. A real one, not kindle edition)! Honestly, this last one may not be the cause. As I’m writing this, my eyes are telling me they’ve had enough and I’ll look like a hardcore raccoon, if I don’t take a break soon!

Which oil is best for dark circles?

There are many different oils best for dark circles. I’ve divided this post into best essential oils for dark circles and best carrier oils for dark circles. What’s more, you can find short and simple tips on how to use the oils under each description.

If you want to skip straight to the recipe, I’ve also made my own facial under-eye oil, DIY serum for dark circles. It’s an easy and beginner-friendly recipe where I’ve included some of the most effective oils from this list. Still, I know that many of you aren’t DIYers, so I wanted to give you a little extra too.

Here, you can find the best oils you can buy, that battle dark circles effectively and promote anti-aging properties at the same time. I’ve tried these oils and I was very satisfied with them. I’m not buying them anymore since I can make my own, but I still recommend them to all who’re not crafters!

1. Natural Under Eye Serum

Natural under eye serum is just what it says: a simple yet carefully designed blend of oils targets to minimize dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles. The natural oils used in this serum are rosehip, pumpkin seed, safflower, and castor oil, combined with helichyrsum, geranium, and blue chamomile essential oils.

I started using this oil because of its natural and organic ingredients. With regular use, I was able to notice the fine lines around my eye getting smaller. My skin appeared more evenly toned and the complexion improved. What’s more, this oil helped to minimize dark circles, but not eliminate them completely. Still, it was happy to notice results (which convinced me to start making my own at home). The serum doesn’t absorb fast enough for my liking but since I only applied it at night, it didn’t matter that much. my skin was soft and supple in the morning, that’s what really mattered.

What’s more, this serum is said to promote skin elasticity and boost collagen production in the skin; I was thrilled to discover its anti-aging properties, along with minimizing dark circles. It helps to regenerate the skin, protects the skin from environmental factors and prevents further water loss. It leaves your skin smooth, soft, and glowing!

Pros

  • Natural and organic ingredients
  • Effective for dark circles
  • Minimizes the signs of aging
  • Reduces dark spots
  • Regenerates the skin
  • Made in the USA
  • USDA-certified farms sourced
  • Vegan and cruelty-free

Cons

  • Takes a while to absorb

Given the fact this is an oil serum, it takes a while to absorb into the skin, but you’ll wake up with a smooth, glowing, and soft facial skin every morning. The scent isn’t too strong and it fades away quite quickly. Plus, a blend of helichrysum and pumpkin seed oil isn’t a common one to find.

2. Eve Hansen Regenerating Facial Oil

A potent yet simple oil mix, this Facial oil contains only three ingredients: rosehip seed oil, rosemary extract, and vitamin E oil. This product improves the firmness of the skin, give it glow, and protect it from the environmental damage. It’ll keep your skin smooth and soft with all-natural and organic ingredients.

The rosehip seed oil has incredible and potent properties for the skin. It’s loaded with essential fatty acids and provitamin A, which means it can minimize the signs of aging, dark spots, and even scars! It improves the overall skin tone, making it glowing, supple, and healthy in appearance. Vitamin E oil helps to prevent additional water loss of the skin, making it smooth and soft. Last but not least, rosemary extract promotes skin regeneration and minimizes puffiness and redness.

Overall, I was able to notice results with this facial oil within a few weeks; but it hasn’t only improved my dark circle situation; it has helped to improve the overall appearance of my face. Just like the serum above, this is oil, so it will be oily when you apply it.

Pros

  • Natural and organic ingredients
  • Simple formula
  • Effective for dark circles
  • Firming and toning
  • Promotes smooth skin
  • Improves complexion
  • Made in the USA

Cons

  • Poor packaging

I’ve only used this facial oil in my night routine, as the last step. It made my skin soft, with a little glow. Clean ingredients and, it’s anti-aging and absorbs quickly. The oil leaves a slight yellow tint on the skin, which is completely natural for rosehip seed oil though, but that’s one of the reasons I preferred to apply it in the evening only.

3. SOCO Botanicals Facial Oil

SOCO botanicals facial oil contains the most ingredients of the three and it also seems the most budget-friendly considering the ingredients and benefits. The concoction effectively minimizes dark circles and the signs of aging. It gave my face a healthy glow, improved skin tone, and overall complexion. It absorbs quite quickly; my skin drank it up. The serum has a mild herbal scent, but it’s not unpleasant and it fades quickly.

After using it for a couple of months I was able to notice the difference in my skin. This facial oil also contains natural and essential oils, as well as vitamins E and A, and coenzyme Q10. Q10 is especially popular in anti-aging skincare as it helps to prevent environmental damage and improve antioxidant protection.

Pros

  • Natural ingredients
  • Minimizes dark circles
  • Rejuvenates the skin
  • Boosts collagen
  • Minimizes wrinkles

Cons

  • Not good for oily skin

This is a potent facial oil that’s loaded with all sorts of benefits and goodies for the skin. A little goes a long way and it’ll make your skin smooth, rejuvenated, and minimize dark circles and fine lines at the same time. You’ll have to use it consistently to get results an while it’s not a miracle worker, it’s effective enough.

Best essential oils for dark circles under eyes

Using essential oils for dark circles should definitely help you improve the situation and eliminate the problem. Have a look at my 5 personal favorite oils for dark circles!

How essential oils help dark circles?

Essential oils are potent potions that soothe many issues when applied topically. Basically, essential oils are liquid plant extracts, highly concentrated. Because of that, you’re always advised to use them with caution. If used undiluted, some of them can cause allergic reactions.

Add a few drops of clove essential oil to olive oil. Apply before you go to bed on a clean skin, under eyes. For best results, combine it with frankincense essential oil!

Frankincense essential oil for dark circles

While far from one of my favorites when it comes to smell, frankincense oil is still very beneficial for the skin: it tones, tightens it and prevents wrinkles.

Why?

Frankincense oil has rejuvenating properties. It boosts the healing process of the skin as well as slows down the signs of aging. If you’re still wondering which oil is best for dark circles, you’ve just found the answer to that.

Frankincense boosts blood circulation, promotes healthy cells, and minimizes skin discoloration. Anti-inflammatory and astringent properties of frankincense oil are just a few of its many beneficial effects.

Lavender essential oil for dark circles

Which is the best oil for dark circles? If frankincense is a second runner-up, lavender is the winner. Its incredible properties are very beneficial for a number of problems, issues, conditions. After all, lavender just may be the most popular essential oil on the planet!

Lavender oil boosts the blood circulation. That means the more oxygen in your blood, healthier cells, more youthful and glowing skin!

What’s more, lavender helps to remove puffiness from your eye area and fade dark spots and circles. It keeps skin moisturized, protected, and healthy. It contains powerful oxidants that protect the skin from free radical damage.

Lavender can help you firm your skin, nurture its cells, and rejuvenate it.

As with the rest of these best oils for dark circles, add a few drops of lavender to carrier oil. If you want to improve the effects, combine it with a drop or two of chamomile oil!

You can also add a few drops of lavender oil to aloe vera gel and apply to your under-eye area before your beauty sleep.

Roman chamomile essential oil for dark circles

There are a number of Roman chamomile oil uses, and a dark circle remedy is just one of them. It has a wide variety of uses and its popularity dates all the way back to Ancient Egypt and Rome.

Why?

Roman chamomile oil helps to detoxify our bodies. It boosts blood circulation and prevents skin inflammations. Moreover, it helps to reduce puffiness but maintains the skin moisturized.

A natural elixir, chamomile oil soothes your skin and rejuvenates it. In other words, it boosts the appearance of healthy-looking skin.

What’s more, chamomile oil has the ability to lighten dull and tired skin. It can brighten it by reducing marks and it can even the skin tone.

Add a few drops of chamomile to a carrier oil, combine it with a few drops of lavender.

Another option is adding a few drops to coconut oil. Apply it under eye area and leave overnight. I’m not particularly fond of coconut oil on my face; I’ve heard it causes breakouts. I’ve never tried it myself, but a lot of people praise the combo! Drop me a line and let me know how it works for you if you’ll try it!

Other essential oils for dark circles

  • geranium essential oil (improves the overall skin tone, boosts circulation, and promotes regeneration of the cells. What’s more, it’s also anti-inflammatory and great for the skin!)
  • cypress essential oil (as an astringent, cypress oil helps to minimize the appearance of dark circles and even puffy eyes!)
  • lemon essential oil (lemon oil can help lighten the dark area under your eyes, and smooth out the complexion of the skin)

Best carrier oils for dark circles

While essential oils can be extremely useful as natural remedies for dark circles, you still need something to dilute them with. That’s where carrier oils come into play.

There are some people who forget about the powerful healing properties of oils. They may seem too greasy, too cookable, too…edible, or just too strange. While I do understand your doubts, I’ll try to change your mind nonetheless.

I believe carrier oils for dark circles are almost equally beneficial as the essential oils.

I’ve gathered top 5 carrier oils for dark circles, let’s get to it!

best oils for dark circles

Castor oil for dark circles

Castor oil is excellent for topical use! It’s thicker than many other oils out there but it’s very moisturizing and beneficial for various skin problems: itchy, dry, psoriasis, eczema…

Castor oil is rich in fatty acids that nurture and hydrate your skin. It also contains antioxidants that protect the skin from the free radicals. With its healing properties, it’s definitely an incredibly valuable carrier oil to keep in your cupboard!

Antifungal, antimicrobial oil that boosts the production of collagen and elastin. It rejuvenates skin, making it seem younger, healthier, and firmer!

Also, castor oil is rich in essential fatty acids, ricinoleic acid being the most important one, as it takes up approximately 90% of the castor oil content.

All of these castor oil properties combined overall benefit the elimination of dark circles.

Argan oil for dark circles

Argan oil used to be one of my favorite carrier oils. It’s a luxurious liquid that is very beneficial for a number of things. I use it in my natural skin serum, in my hair mist, and body lotion. Argan has been called a “miracle cure” and it may not have been exaggerated!

Why?

Argan oil is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins A and E. It returns the moisture to the skin and minimizes fine lines. Its antioxidants fight the free radicals and protect the skin from oxidation, inflammation, and dehydration.

Moreover, this oil restores the collagen and elastin levels of your skin, giving it a youthful and healthy glow. It seals in moisture and it appropriate for dry, sensitive and oily skin since its comedogenic rate is 0!

Rosehip oil for dark circles

I’ve actually discovered rosehip oil quite recently in comparison to many other oils. While I drink rosehip tea regularly, it hadn’t dawned on me to use the oil, until my sister wanted a natural remedy for her acne polluted face.

Rosehip oil, or rosehip seed oil, is an oil that many companies cheat on. It has to be reddish (amber) in color without the floral scent. If you get the right thing, it’s ridiculously beneficial for the skin!

Why?

The major and most important components in rosehip oil with the healing benefits are the fatty acids. Apart from that, the oil also contains vitamins and various properties, such as antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal.

Hydrating, moisturizing, rosehip has it all. If not all, a lot! It locks in moisture and helps to brighten the skin. It is rich in vitamins A and E but doesn’t contain any vitamin C, which so many blogs and websites tend to advertise.

Anyway, rosehip oil also helps to reduce inflammation and contains antioxidant properties.

It helps to reduce hyperpigmentation, and it’s one of your best friends when it comes to eliminating dark circles successfully.

Anything else?

Yes! Rosehip oil is also very beneficial for scars! Read more in my older post on rosehip oil for acne scars! You can start eliminating them today!

How to use rosehip oil for dark circles?

Apply the oil directly to your clean skin.

Mix it with essential oil of your choice.

Combine it with another carrier oil and essential oils.

Go crazy, experiment.

(but ignore the comedogenic rating in the video 🙂

Tips on using oils for dark circles

Now you know which oil(s) is best for dark circles. You can choose between any on this list and start applying them regularly.

However, there are natural cures or dark circles under the eyes, but keep in mind a few things:

  • change doesn’t happen in one single day (although it might in a week or two)
  • test the oils for any possible allergic reactions you might have. The area around the eye is super sensitive!
  • Eliminate negative influences of your lifestyle on your skin appearance (those we discussed at the beginning!)
  • Be persistent and follow the routine to get the best results

There are three, also very popular alternatives to all these oils for dark circles I’ve just listed. You can eventually also use coconut oil, olive oil, and rosewater.

I don’t like to put coconut oil on my face. It goes in my mouth, on my hair, in my ears, on my nails, but not on my face. That’s why it’s not on the list.

Olive oil can also be and beneficial oil for dark circles, but it’s on my plate and in my tanning oil. I really just wanted some diversity.

Rose water or better still, rose hydrosol is a very beneficial and regular practice for some in terms of dark circles. You can soak cotton pads in rosewater and cover your eye area with them (when your eyes are closed, duh!).

Rosewater is a toner and has incredibly loads of goodie skin benefits. I’ve written about it in my rosewater skin and hair benefits.

A little extra: what vitamin gets rid of dark circles under eyes?

Remember almond oil and its vitamin K? Well, this vitamin is quite beneficial for dark circles, but I wanted to give you an addition to your homemade dark circles’ remedies:

Vitamin E oil for dark circles

This natural ingredient is a staple in my homemade products. I add it to most of what I make because it’s very beneficial. Now, vitamin E oil is not a preservative and cannot replace one. It is, however, a powerful antioxidant!

You may have already found questions online such as: is vitamin E good for dark circles under eyes. I’m here to tell you some good news: yes, it is!

Because it’s an antioxidant, it helps to fight the free radical damage, protecting your skin from looking dull, tired, and aged.

Vitamin E oil nourishes the skin, helps to regenerate it, moisturize it, and eventually making your skin soft and healthy!

How to use vitamin E oil for dark spots?

Add a few drops of it to one of your carrier/essential oil mixtures, or use it by itself. Apply on clean skin before you go to bed and let it work its magic overnight!

Which oil for dark spots is your fave? And better- what’s your excuse to have them in the first place?

Conclusion: best oils for under eyes?

As you can see, there are many carrier and essential oils we can use to help reduce dark circles around eyes. It’s important to know that you can try and eliminate dark circles with your diet, lifestyle, and small changes in your life. Dark circles may appear when we’re too tired, work too much, sleep poorly and have a glass of wine too many. That’s why a good old liver detox can do much more than a facial oil in terms of effectiveness and real results.

Still, having an essential oil recipe for dark under-eye circles can’t hurt. Oil generally nourishes the eye area with its nutrients and positive benefits. I’ve noticed positive results after I started applying it regularly. But I also make sure to treat my eye area with gentle care and I drink enough water and don’t work late hours whenever I can.

Also, there isn’t one and only the best carrier oil for under eyes; there are many best oils for dark circles. It all depends on your needs and your skin type. I’ve started with this recipe (very easy to make) and my skin has definitely improved over the last few months.

If you’re not much of a DIYer or don’t have time for it, there are commercial products available that do the trick of eliminating those panda eyes effectively. While choosing the best oil for dark circles under eyes, there are many options out there. I’ve listed a few in the article, but if I had to choose one, I recommend SOCO Botanicals Facial Oil.

It contains a unique blend of essential and carrier oils (some that I’ve already mentioned in the article), and it’s cruelty-free, made with natural ingredients. A bonus? It also contains coenzyme Q10, which helps to minimize the signs of aging and protect the skin from oxidative stress.

      • Hey Karen, I’m actually just working on a recipe which I’ll publish in the next couple of days, but in short, I’d recommend you to bled the following: helichrysum and chamomile essential oils with sweet almond and rosehip oil. I’d also add a few drops of vitamin E in there; it’ll help prolong the shelf life of your oil and also nourish your skin. Hope this helps.
